SCORES of villagers from the 630 households that were affected by floods in Gokwe South last week, are in dire need of food aid and temporary shelter among other basic needs.
The affected communities are mainly from Wards 14, 15, 17, 31 and 24. The heavy downpours also destroyed Sesame Bridge that links Nembudziya in Gokwe North and Gokwe South District thereby disrupting business supplies and human movement.
The swelling floods also swept away a borehole drilling rig following heavy rains that fell in Gokwe.
Gokwe South District civil protection committee chairperson, Ms Netsai Mushauri, said following the floods, her committee assessed the damage to infrastructure and impact of the floods to communities.
“The committee established that 630 households were affected by the floods and most of them were in urgent need of food aid and temporary shelter,”she said.
Ms Mushauri said many huts were destroyed and food, clothes, blankets and other belongings were washed away.
“I am from Ward 17 and I have three children. I lost groceries and some blankets following the floods. We are appealing for assistance because right now we have no food,” said Mr Brendon Ncube.
Mrs Annie Mandipa said her kitchen was also destroyed and her belongings were washed away.
“The rains were accompanied by strong winds on that day which destroyed my hut which had food and other belongings,” she said.
Mrs Mandipa said they were appealing for food and other basics such as clothes and blankets.
