Regional FMs meet on security in Central African Republic

LIBREVILLE — Regional foreign ministers are meeting in the Gabonese capital Libreville to discuss a new mechanism to restore security in Central African Republic, according to official sources. The extraordinary meeting of the Central African Peace and Security Council (COPAX) was opened on Monday the chairmanship of Chadian Foreign Minister Faki Mahamat.

On the continued deterioration of the security situation since the former government was toppled in Central African Republic in March, the foreign ministers of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) will present their recommendations to the institution’s current chairman, Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno.

The ministers are expected to call for immediate reinforcement of the Peace Consolidation Mission in the Central African Republic (MICOPAX2), which comprises 2,000 officers.

Early in the year, the gave situation in Central African Republic forced the ECCAS presidents to create MICOPAX2, with an expanded mandate to restore security in the country. – Xinhua.
