AT least 13 people, mostly children under the age of five years, died from 7 724 cases of common diarrhoea reported throughout the country last week, a disease surveillance report has revealed. According to the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare weekly disease surveillance report for Week 32, at least 1 270 of the reported cases were recorded in Manicaland while 1 105 were in Mashonaland West provinces.
“Of the reported cases 4 272 and eight deaths were from the under five years of age. The cumulative figure for diarrhoea is 332 562 and 321 deaths this year,” the report said.
The deaths were reported from Chipinge and Murehwa District Hospitals, Mpilo Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
The previous week alone at least five diarrhoeal deaths were recorded while a total of 5 982 cases were reported with 3 465 of these being recorded from the under five age group.
Meanwhile, two new suspected typhoid cases were reported from Sanyati and Chegutu in Mashonaland Central, bringing the cumulative figure for typhoid to 1 399.
