Salvation Army commissions officers

The Salvation Army Church in Zimbabwe yesterday ordained and commissioned 39 new officers who were posted to various parts of the country for pastoral work. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Braeside, Harare Commissioner Henry Nyagah called on the new officers to go out and fulfil God’s calling by serving both the physical and spiritual needs of the people they are going to serve.

“God is sending you out to serve His people,” he said. “It is God’s expectation that you meet His people’s needs. You are proclaimers of the resurrection, as such go out and tell people about the good news of the resurrection.”

Comm Nyagah said the Salvation Army was growing fast in Zimbabwe, with 122 000 “senior soldiers” and 100 000 “junior soldiers” that are served by 500 officers.

“We are happy with the support that we are getting from Government,” he said. “The country is privileged as the church, through its various ministries is providing social services like health and education.”

The new officers graduated from the church’s Officer Training College, which is affiliated to the University of Zimbabwe, with Diplomas in Theology.

Congratulating the new officers, the church’s newly appointed international leader who is based in the UK, General Andre Cox said: “You have a wonderful sessional name — Proclaimers of the Resurrection — for it not only identifies you as a group who have all belonged to the same session, but it challenges each of you individually by emphasising what is to be the central focus of your ministry through out the years ahead.”

The Salvation Army also runs schools and various old people’s homes in the country.,
