7 die in kombi crash

truck at the intersection of Samora Machel Avenue and Bishop Gaul Avenue in Harare.
The accident occurred around 4:44am.

There were 11 passengers in the kombi that was heading towards the city centre, while the truck was travelling along Bishop Gaul Avenue.
National police traffic spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome said one person was pronounced dead on admission at Parirenyatwa Hospital, while the injured were admitted at the same hospital.

Insp Chigome said they suspected the driver of the Toyota Hiace, who also died on the spot, was speeding.
“The haulage truck was coming from the northern suburbs while the kombi was coming from the Warren Park area.

“We suspect the driver was speed-ing and upon encountering the haulage truck at the intersection, he failed to brake,” said Insp Chigome.
Insp Chigome appealed to drivers to exercise extreme caution when approaching intersections.
“We are always on record telling drivers to be cautious whenever approaching intersections.

“People should reduce speed whether the robot is green or not because we end up losing lives,” he said.
However, when The Herald visited the scene, traffic lights at the intersection were not functioning and some motorists say they have been down for some time.
Belvedere residents said the intersection has become a black spot.
