EMAKHANDENI Cricket Club is targeting hosting first-class cricket next year as work to upgrade the facility gathers pace, with key infrastructure now taking shape at the community-based venue.
The laying of the turf and installation of electricity are among the major developments currently underway as the ground moves closer to meeting the standards required to stage top-level domestic cricket.
The project’s manager Nick Singo said the ambition was to have the venue ready to host first-class matches next year.
“Our target is to host first-class cricket here next year. The project is progressing well. The turf is now being laid and electricity is being installed. These are important stages in the development of the ground,” he said.
The latest developments represent another significant step in a project that has been more than two decades in the making.
Established in the early 2000s, Emakhandeni Cricket Club was created to provide opportunities for young people from Bulawayo’s high-density suburbs to play cricket at a time when access to the sport was largely limited to a few established clubs.
