BEITBRIDGE Hotel will be a hive of activity this morning when 72 pool players from the border town, Bulawayo and Gwanda compete in an Inter-Association Singles Tournament.

Donald Wadawu, the Bulawayo Pool Association marketing and publicity secretary said the competition is meant to improve the standard of sport and market it.

He said Bulawayo’s 24 representatives are raring to go having undergone a two-week training camp.

“We want to improve the quality of the game in our region and also improve players’ performance during matches. This platform will allow us as an association to catch the attention of potential sponsors. Showcasing the best talent, attracting bigger numbers is what sponsors want and this is what we’re giving them,” said Wadawu.

“As Bulawayo, we’ve had interesting preparations and players have built up quite an interesting competitive spirit and we hope to have an entertaining and thrilling weekend.”

Bulawayo’s best, among them Innocent Nash, Paul Mutizo, Geshom Nash, Bruce Manyere, Joseph Tamanikwa, Brian Dziko, Prosper Murove, Costa Tamanikwa and Quinton Rollo are expected to make it into the top eight.

The Beitbridge competition is the first of a tri-series that the associations are planning with the next editions set for Bulawayo and Gwanda before the end of the year.

Gwanda’s spokesman Adam Kamurai said they will not be pushovers.

“The players are eager and ready to play. We’ve a fairly young yet competitive squad that can compete against the region’s best,” said Kamurai.

Team Gwanda will bank on Vusa Moyo, Wonder Joya, Priviledge Ncube and Liffody Shava to push them to victory.
