73-year-old husband beater sentenced

FORMER Zimbabwe Saints chairman Lazarus Magwaro’s wife, Molly Magwaro (73), who was brought to court for physically abusing her husband, has been sentenced to one month in prison or a fine of US$100.

Mrs Magwaro of Morningside suburb in Bulawayo was convicted of physical abuse by Bulawayo magistrate Mr Maxwell Ncube.

She was also slapped with a suspended sentence of one month on condition she does not commit a similar crime within the next five years.

Mrs Magwaro was spared prison term as the magistrate noted that she was a senior citizen.

Prosecutor, Ms Josephine Gurazhira, said the alleged incident occurred on January 29 at around 11AM, while the couple was receiving counselling from three officers at their home.

During the counselling session, Mrs Magwaro sprang from her seat and slapped Mr Magwaro on the head.

Mr Magwaro fell as a result of the impact.

The source of the argument was that Mr Magwaro (83) accused his wife of having a boyfriend hence her reaction.

Mr Magwaro had invited the counselling officers from Mhlahlandlela Government Complex to resolve their marital issues. Following the assault, a police report was made, leading to Molly’s arrest.
