The Zimbabwe community in South Africa has commended organisations that continue to help distressed migrants that cannot provide food for themselves due to the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown in South Africa.
ZimCommSA spokesperson, Mr Bongani Mazwi Mkwananzi, yesterday said 74 Zimbabweans had received food parcels from Africa Awake, in Gauteng province.
Beneficiaries of the food parcels provided by Solidarity Fund, Gauteng Food Security and other donors, live in Berea, Yeoville and Hillbrow.
“This will go a long way in assisting the beneficiaries as we continue to battle Covid-19,” said Mr Mkwananzi.
“The lockdown has affected the income of many families as some the industries remain closed.”
Support is being mobilised for 2 000 Zimbabweans who registered for assistance.
Mr Mkwananzi said they were grateful to those extending help to fellow countrymen.
“We applaud many other organisations and institutions who have gone out to assist many others who may not be in our database and encourage such acts,” he said.
“We implore all those in difficult situations to hang around while efforts are being made to attend to their plight.”
About 6 000 Zimbabweans in South Africa are reportedly food insecure.
Over 3 000 others have since returned home in the last two months with the assistance of the Zimbabwe Embassy in South Africa and other stakeholders.
