POLICE have arrested eight MDC-T activists following political violence that erupted in Epworth on Sunday after a rally addressed by party leader Morgan Tsvangirai.National police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba yesterday said their investigations had revealed that MDC-T supporters started the violence which resulted in 15 Zanu-PF supporters being injured.

“Eight MDC-T activists have been arrested in connection  to the political violence that happened on Sunday,” she said.
“Unlike what has been reported, the fact on the ground is that the MDC-T instigated the violence.”

Police have also warned perpetrators of political violence that those found on the wrong side of the law would face the consequences.
Zanu-PF chairman for Tembwe District in Epworth, Cde Japhet Chiromo at the weekend said MDC-T youths started the violence by provoking some of their members.

He said their rowdy behaviour escalated as they started throwing stones and destroying property including breaking doors and glass panes at some houses.

Cde Chiromo said this led to police firing smoke canisters in an effort to disperse them.

Meanwhile, Tsvangirai also accused Zanu-PF youths of instigating the violence which he said led to his supporters being hospitalised.
Political violence is not new to MDC-T as several intra-party clashes have seen many injured. Former deputy treasurer, Elton Mangoma was recently assaulted by party youths loyal to Tsvangirai after he had called for leadership renewal in the party.

Earlier this year, Police Commissioner-General, Augustine Chihuri urged members of the police to be on guard to deter political violence.
