8 villagers kill mental patient

EIGHT Rusape villagers were recently arrested for allegedly teaming up to fatally assault a suspected mental patient.

The eight — Tadiwa Sikeleti (52), Leonard Tekere (34), Caleb Dzokurasa (63), Dairus Marara (65), Taurai Gwira (34), Tafirenyika Mombeyarara (age not given), Password Matemera (24) and Wilson Pamire (50) — were represented by Mr Leonard Chigadza of Chigadza and Associates.

They were not asked to plead when they appeared before Rusape magistrate, Ms Lucy- Annie Ndiraya who remanded them out of custody to May 3 on $20 000 bail each.

Prosecuting, Mrs Melissa Saide said the eight accused used sticks, a hoe handle and bricks to assault Best Tsvangirai all over the body until he died.

“On April 16, at Village 5B, Romsely in Nyazura, the eight accused persons teamed up to tie Tsvangirai with a rope and wire. They took turns to assault him with sticks, bricks and a hole handle all over the body.

“There are witnesses who saw accused persons committing the offence and sticks, pieces of bricks, a hole handle, a rope and a wire that were used to assault the now deceased were recovered by the police,” said Mrs Saide.
