Kwekwe City Council has spent US$675 000 on purchasing service vehicles and other equipment.
Mayor Albert Zinhanga said the five Toyota Hilux GD6 single-cab utility vehicles will be distributed to various departments while 10 skip bins and a grader will go a long way in improving service delivery.
The local authority also purchased a speedboat worth US$6500 for monitoring activities within the Sebakwe Dam catchment area, which is being affected by illegal mining and fishing activities that are now threatening the quality of the city’s water.
Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minster Owen Ncube commissioned the equipment at the townhouse.
He said local authorities are taking heed of Government’s call for the prioritisation of service delivery,
“The equipment I am commissioning today was procured using Council’s own revenue, which is commendable since residents deserve improved service delivery from the payments they make,” said Minister Ncube.
“This underscores the President’s mantra nyika inovakwa nevene vayo.”
Minister Ncube said besides being one of the cleanest cities in the country, Kwekwe is also one of the best performing in terms of provincial gross domestic product.
“Kwekwe is among the top-performing local authorities in the country, anchoring Midlands’ Provincial GDP growth driven by investments in mining, construction and tourism,” he said.
Mayor Zinhanga chipped in: “We are proud to notify you that the US$675 424 for the equipment and utility vehicles was paid in cash. We used money from revenue collections to purchase the equipment,” he said.
“This is just the beginning of greater things to come. The development shows that council and management are united in improving service delivery.”
