made the remark during a tour of the diamond fields by the civil society last week. It is believed that over 120 000 hectares of land in Chiadzwa have diamonds, making Zimbabwe the largest source of alluvial gems in the world.
When asked on the lifespan of the mine, Mr Dube said: “On the life of the area when you start a mine you want to know the life before you mine. Chiadzwa is the eighth wonder of the world. Nothing is known as yet (on the life of the fields). We are still doing exploration and exploration takes years.”
He said the concession given to Marange Resources “has a long, long life”. Mr Dube said the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation, which partners all diamond mines operating in Marange, was embarking on an extensive exploration programme. Marange Resources is wholly owned by Zimbabweans and took over operations from the now defunct Canadile Mine three years ago.
