NINE comedians are set to get people laughing at Bulawayo’s Umahlekisa Comedy Night’s first anniversary celebrations at Horizon Pub and Grill.
The funny men and women, drawn from Harare and Bulawayo, will converge at the venue on March 7.
In an interview, Umahlekisa director, Ntando van Moyo said he wanted to make it a comedy fest on the day of the celebrations.
He said comics from Harare would be invited to the Umahlekisa Comedy show.

“We are finalising for March 7 and we are going to have a lot of comics for the night. We are just in the final stages of negotiations and we are geared to do what we know best – make people laugh,” said Van Moyo.

He said Nama Outstanding comic award winner Simba the Comic, Doc Vikela, Clive Chigubu and Bulawayo’s first female comedian Nomsa Muleya will be part of the celebrations.

The eccentric Chigubu confirmed his attendance and said people should be ready for a night of laughs.
“I will be there to make people laugh. As you know stand up comedy is growing and this is very significant to be celebrating such an achievement with other comics,” said Chigubu.

The first female comedian in Bulawayo also confirmed her attendance.
Judging by her debut performance Nomsa is tipped to continue in the same vein, of being laid back and witty at the same time.
Other comics include Long John, Allen Marshal, Keith Zaks and HO.

Umahlekisa Comedy Nights was founded by Van Moyo in March last year. This was upon realisation that stand up comedy was growing in Harare and nothing was being done in the city.

Appreciation of the shows has significantly grown in the recent months and has motivated young comics to line up more shows.
