Theseus Shambare in VICTORIA FALLS
VICTORIA FALLS was awash with colour and joy on Friday morning as thousands of children from seven Southern African countries gathered to celebrate World Children’s Day.
Streets came alive with a vibrant procession, featuring music, dance and cultural displays.
The procession, which began at Chinotimba long-distance bus rank, wound its way through the city, drawing enthusiastic crowds.
Residents lined the streets, eager to catch a glimpse of the young participants.
The day’s festivities will be held at Baobab Primary School, where President Mnangagwa and his counterparts from Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia are expected to attend.
The event is aimed at promoting children’s rights and advocating for a better future for the African child.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Educate and Skill the African Child for Posterity”.
Children’s representatives from each country will share their perspectives and call for action.
To symbolise hope in the future, the “Torch of Hope” will be unveiled.
Heads of State will renew their commitment to implementing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
As part of the celebrations, 570 children will embark on a tour of the Victoria Falls Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the evening, Vice President Dr Costantino Chiwenga will lead the lighting of the Flame of Hope on the Victoria Falls Bridge, further illuminating the significance of this special day.
