Highlanders forward Calvin ‘Kung Fu Panda’ Chigonero had an impressive debut when he scored two goals to help his team beat Yadah 2-0 in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday.
Despite Yadah dominating most of the game, Highlanders capitalised on their chances, and Chigonero’s brace secured the win.
Chigonero, who joined Highlanders from Division One side, Talen Vision, has already become a fan favourite, with supporters creating a song in his honour.
He also replicated Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration, the ‘siiuuu’ citing the player as his role model and saying hard work is more important than talent.
“Cristiano is my favourite player. He is a hard worker who I emulate in a number of things.
“The biggest lesson that I have learnt from him is that hard work is more important than talent. Hard work can beat talent,” he said.
Despite Yadah controlling the game for the better part of the game Bosso capitalised on its chances and collected maximum points.
The 22-year-old Chigonero was introduced on the stroke of the hour and went on to grab a brace.
Bosso were poor in away matches last season and struggled to register a win. They, however, broke a 32-match winless streak outside Bulawayo by beating Yadah.
After grabbing his opener on Saturday, Chigonero sprinted to embrace assistant coach, Joel Luphahla, who was in the stands.
“Joel is our strikers’ coach, and he is always guiding us during training,” said Chigonero.
“Among our strikers, I am the youngest and Joel always tells me to keep on believing so it was just an emotional moment,” he said.
“When I was on the touchline and about to go in, coach (Baltemor Brito) told me to go and express myself.
“He said go and play to your abilities and it’s what happened and it paid off.”
