THE Independence Flame is set to embark on a historic journey across Matabeleland South, being taken to important liberation-era sites as a testimony of the nation’s enduring spirit of freedom as the province prepares to host the 46th National Independence Day Celebrations.

In a statement, the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) said the routing of the flame has been designed to reflect the inclusive nature of the Second Republic’s developmental programmes under the “leaving no one and no place behind” philosophy.

“As the preparations for the ‘Zim @ 46’ Independence Celebrations gather momentum, tremendous work is taking place at various sites within Matabeleland South Province, which will host the eagerly awaited commemorations,” the NMMZ stated.

The flame’s journey will officially begin in Beitbridge District, with the official launch set for 10 April at Zezani.
Vice-President Cde Constantino Chiwenga is expected to lead the ceremony at this historic site, which served as a critical assembly point during the ceasefire period.

Following the inaugural proceedings at Zezani, the Flame will begin its symbolic procession across the province.
It will first be conveyed through Gwanda District before moving into Insiza and Umzingwane districts.

The journey will then conclude its circuit by passing through the western reaches of the province, traversing both Bulilima and Mangwe districts as the nation prepares for the main Independence Day Celebrations.

The relay will culminate in a second lighting ceremony at Ratanyana in Matobo District on 17 April, 2026, to be conducted by Vice-President Cde Kembo Mohadi.

This will serve as the final prelude to the main celebrations at Maphisa on 18 April. A high-level reconnaissance team from the NMMZ comprising Mr Phineas Chauke, Mr Kennedy Chinyama and Mr Bernard Mupangapanga has been on the ground engaging provincial and district leadership to ensure a seamless programme.

“The reconnaissance team is working closely with the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Cde Albert Nguluvhe, the District Development Co-ordinators as well as other Government actors,” the NMMZ said.

The NMMZ emphasised that the exercise follows the ‘Whole of Government Approach” championed by President Mnangagwa, aimed at ensuring the celebrations are truly inclusive.

“The main objective of this exercise is to map the route . . . in order to have a successful programme of events that reflects the inclusive nature of all Government programmes under the able guidance of the President . . . under the mantra “leaving no one and no place behind,” the statement further reads.

The Independence Flame is more than a mere spectacle; it represents the “enduring spirit of Zimbabwe” and serves as a solemn reminder of the nation’s history and resilience.

By visiting historic sites, the Government aims to honour the sacrifices of heroes who fought for the “Rainbow Province” and the nation at large.

The NMMZ added: “This exercise is also meant to lay the groundwork for mobilising people to come in their numbers to the main celebrations at Maphisa.”

As the flame ignites across the province, it will signify a momentous milestone in Zimbabwe’s journey toward 46 years of self-rule, bridging the gap between the heroes of the past and the youth of the future.
