BULAWAYO’S arts scene is buzzing as celebrated doyen Saimon Mambazo Phiri launched his 50 Dates in the Theatre festival — a party, a celebration and a cultural revival all rolled into one.

“Growing up, I never had a birthday party in my name. It’s just not in my culture,” Mambazo told the crowd at the launch. But when he turned 50, friends and family decided it was time to honour his life and the stage became the ultimate venue.

The festival, running from 19 August to 1 November, has already lit up Bulawayo with music, dance and theatre. Artistes gracing the stage include Sam Siwela, Novuyo Seagirl, Hwamanda Dance Troupe, Khaya Arts, Amaqaqa, Fab, Hwabaraty, Thaluso Da Poet and Band of Misfits.

Emerging talent is also getting a chance to shine. “It’s not just about me. Bulawayo has amazing creatives, and this festival is their stage too,” said Mambazo. Theatre fans can expect hits like Khokhoba Township, Zwelethu, Griiii Eshe, Live in Bulawayo and the touring classic, Zambezi Express.

The festival isn’t just for performers. Audiences are thrilled. “This is something Bulawayo really needed. I feel proud seeing our artistes celebrated like this,” said Tinashe Dube, a local theatre-goer. Another fan, Lindiwe Moyo, added,

“The energy here is electric. You can feel the city coming alive through the arts.”

Mambazo said older creatives, including original Zambezi Express cast members, will share stories, making it a true celebration of the city’s artistic history.

He also called on the public to support the festival. “Help us make this a massive arts party. Contributions, collaborations, spreading the word, as everything counts,” he said.

With events in full swing, 50 Dates in the Theatre is breathing new life into Bulawayo’s cultural scene, turning the city into a hub for creativity, celebration and tourism.

“Bulawayo is alive again,” shouted a jubilant festival-goer, echoing the sentiment on the streets. “This is our arts city, and we are here for it!”
