A SPA WITH A SOUL. . . How a challenging past fueled a passion for empowerment

Mthabisi Tshuma

MOREBLESSING Sola’s upbringing in Empandeni West Village, rural Plumtree, laid the foundation for her incredible journey. Like many young girls in similar circumstances, she faced significant hurdles, particularly in her academic pursuits. Limited access to resources and opportunities often hindered her, making it incredibly difficult to find employment after finishing her secondary education. This first-hand experience of hardship and the struggle for a better future deeply instilled in her a desire to give back.

She eventually sought “greener pastures” in South Africa. Despite her determination and hard work, Mobby, as she’s widely known, was repeatedly told she wasn’t qualified for the jobs she applied for. This constant rejection could have shattered her spirit. Instead, it fuelled her desire to create something of her own.

With a passion for beauty and wellness, Mobby decided to take matters into her own hands and launch her own spa company, Mobby Day Spa.

Starting with little more than a dream and a strong will, Mobby began her journey. She invested countless hours learning the spa industry at Body Wellness Boutique Cresta, mastering everything from skincare to massage techniques, and worked tirelessly to build her brand. Her dedication paid off, and her spa company quickly gained popularity in Midrand.

Mobby explained that the struggles many Zimbabwean women based in South Africa face pushed her to stand up for herself and for them.

“I founded Mobby Day Spa on 10 June 2020 after I was inspired by the growth in Zimbabwean ladies who could not get jobs in South Africa because they didn’t have paperwork or matric certificates.

“I opened the spa as I wanted to give them an opportunity to benefit by the works of their hands. I believed that this would enable them to put food on the table and support the families they left home.”

Mobby Day Spa is more than just a business; it has become the only hope for many young girls in rural areas through a dedicated scholarship programme.

Through this initiative, she provides financial support to promising students, giving them the chance to pursue their dreams without the burden of financial constraints. The programme specifically focuses on empowering girls, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in life.

“I offer scholarships to children back home, and at the recently held DJ Mapressa Glam and Fashion Show, I pledged R7 500 towards rural children who are struggling to pay fees in Zimbabwe. I also offer sponsorships to ladies who can’t afford to pay fees for courses, and I pay for their certificates and place them at work locally and overseas. I do events management as well.”

Mobby Day Spa employs six full-time people and regularly takes on five part-time workers when they have group spa treatments, demonstrating her commitment to creating opportunities for others.
