Chunga is in Belgium on a reunion tour, after 20 years of separation, and was hosted by the Aalst mayor, Christoph D’Haese, and his councilors in the Pieter Coucke Hall at Town Hall.
The DeMbare legend was also given the honour of signing the Golden Book of the City.
“I am especially pleased with the reception I have received here in this city,” Chunga said at the special ceremony.
“Everyone is friendly and I am really happy to be here.”
Only special visitors to the city of Aalst are given the honour to sign the Golden Book of the City.
They include Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who is the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, the oldest ever spouse of a reigning British monarch.
Princess Mathilde, the Duchess of Brabant, who is the wife of the heir apparent to the Belgian throne, Prince Phillipe, the Dube of Brabant, has also signed the Golden Book of the City.
She is expected to be the first Belgian-born Queen consort of Belgium.
Celebrated Belgian stand-up comedian, Bert Kruismans, also has his signature in the Golden Book of the City.
Kruismans is a native of Aalst.
The page that Chunga signed features an image of the footballer, against a background of the Aalst logo and the Zimbabwe flag, and his signature and the Number 14, which was his jersey number during his days at the club.
Chunga watched his second match, since arriving in Aalst on Sunday, but this time his club was beaten 0-1 at home by KAS Eupen.
Always the critical analyst, Chunga was frank when asked about his impressions of the game by saying that Aalst had played poorly and were disappointing on home soil in that tie.
He will watch another match, on the road, this weekend.
Chunga will be in Aalst for Christmas and only returns home on Thursday.
Yesterday Chunga told The Herald that he was overwhelmed by the reception he has been receiving at his old club.
“I knew we enjoyed a special relationship because we did a lot of good things together but, to be frank with you, I never expected that they would open their arms, in such a big way, and give me such a great reception,” said Chunga.
“It’s sad that I will be away from home and my family during Christmas but that’s the price you pay for being a football personality and there will be many footballers, around the world, who will be away from their families around this period.
“I have been working on a number of projects, since I arrived here, and we will talk about them after everything has been finalised.”
