Abusive mom jailed

Melisa Nengomasha (25) locked up the boy in a room for hours as she went to drink beer at a nightclub.
On her return, she discovered that the boy had soiled his pants and floor and beat him with an electric cord.
Nengomasha’s son is now in the custody of the Department of Social Welfare after it was proven she was an irresponsible parent.
Mbare magistrate Mr Reward Kwenda rapped the woman for being irresponsible adding that her moral blameworthiness was very high under the circumstances.
“The accused person’s moral blameworthiness is very high considering the manner in which the child was assaulted. It was brutal.
“The accused’s behaviour shows that she is an alcoholic who does not care about her own child’s welfare. She left the boy alone during the night while she went on a drinking binge to various nightclubs,” said Mr Kwenda.
The court also found that cases of child abuse were on the increase and that deterrent penalties would go a long way to reduce the cases.
Prosecutor Ms Tracy Mundanga established that last month Nengomasha left the boy alone at night as she went for a beer drink.
The boy, who did not have access to the toilet, relieved himself inside the locked room. When the mother returned, she got so angry and whipped the boy all over using an electric cable. The boy sustained serious injuries and neighbours made a police report leading to the woman’s arrest. – CR.
