“We also impounded 1 777 unroadworthy vehicles and issued a total of 64 966 tickets so far,” Supt Phiri said.
Last year, 98 people were killed while 1 090 others were injured in 1 119 road accidents recorded during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
About 2 909 defective vehicles we-re impounded.
Most accidents were attributed to speeding, misjudgment, lack of atte-ntion and drunken driving.
Government has urged motorists – particularly transport operators – to adhere to traffic rules to reduce carnage.
Police yesterday continued with their blitz and maintained visibility on most roads in Harare.
Such was the situation in other cities, towns and on major high-ways.
