HARARE acting mayor, Lovejoy Chitengu, has called on the Government to create new water sources to meet the needs of the city’s increasingly underserved population.
Current supplies are facing a multitude of difficulties, including outdated equipment and chemical shortages, making it increasingly difficult to deliver sufficient clean water.
While construction of the Kunzvi Dam by the Government will help with reliable water provision, rehabilitation of equipment at Jaffray Morton water works will also be needed.
Chitengu hopes to gain support from the Government to keep the water supply in Harare adequate and clean.
“We are appealing for construction of new water sources to meet the demand of the over three million people in Harare.
“There is the construction of the Kunzvi dam by the Government which we hope to be fast-tracked as it will aid Harare with reliable and clean water supply.
“However, there is a need for rehabilitation of our equipment at the Jaffray Morton as some of it is now outdated.
“Chemicals are also in low supply as the water now requires a lot of chemicals for its treatment due to rampant contamination unlike before.
“We hope that if we get the necessary support from the Government, we will be able to supply adequate and clean water,” said Chitengu.
