UPCOMING actress Victoria Chikuni said she is taking deliberate steps to build a successful career in Africa’s growing film industry by pursuing learning opportunities and professional exposure in Nigeria.

Better known as Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry has continued to make an impression globally, with new stars emerging every day.

As such, local actors hold Nollywood in high esteem.

Chikuni, an emerging actress and a member of the Content Creators Association of Zimbabwe (COCAZ), recently travelled to Nigeria to expand her knowledge of filmmaking and network with established industry professionals.

In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Chikuni said she will gain practical experience from some of Africa’s leading actors, directors, producers, and filmmakers.

The actress believes the trip forms part of a long-term vision to develop her acting career while contributing to the growth of Zimbabwe’s film industry.

“My passion is acting and storytelling. I believe film has the power to inspire, educate, and connect people across different cultures,” she said.

Rather than rushing into producing her own films, Chikuni has chosen to invest time in learning the craft from experienced professionals.

“I believe excellence comes through learning, patience, discipline, and continuous improvement.

“At this stage of my career, my focus is on gaining practical experience, observing how successful productions are made, and building meaningful relationships within the industry,” she added.

Chikuni believes the knowledge and skills she acquires abroad will benefit not only her personal career but also Zimbabwe’s creative sector.

“My dream is to return home with valuable experience that will help strengthen Zimbabwean storytelling, create opportunities for young creatives, and contribute to the development of our local film industry,” she said.

As a member of COCAZ, Chikuni said she remains committed to representing Zimbabwe with professionalism while promoting authentic African stories on the continental stage.

Chikuni said her determination, humility, and willingness to learn will inspire other aspiring creatives to invest in mastering their craft before seeking the spotlight.

“Every great actor starts as a student of the craft,” she said.

Takunda Tapfuma, Co-Founder of COCAZ, said their aim is to help young content creators connect with other successful creators across Africa.

“As COCAZ, it’s a big win for us to bring Nollywood’s expertise and networks to boost our local industry.

“We are talking skills transfer, collaborations, and more opportunities for Zimbabwean creatives.

“Chikuni has had the privilege of meeting Nollywood pioneers and visiting film sets – an eye-opening experience.

“This trip is not only about her but it’s also about putting Zimbabwean brands on the map globally. This is what we need: more partnerships that push African stories forward,” he added.
