THE Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) has set bold targets for 2025, focusing on enhancing safety and security, diversifying revenue streams and improving overall airport facilitation.
These initiatives align with the company’s long-term vision of becoming the regional leader in airport services by 2030.
ACZ closed 2024 on a high note, having achieved several key milestones, including the successful completion of the US$153 million expansion and upgrade of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport to world-class standards.
The company is now prioritising outstanding strategic initiatives aimed at boosting revenue growth, increasing non-aeronautical income and strengthening operational efficiency.
Expanding aviation infrastructure
In an interview with Zimpapers Business Hub, ACZ public relations and communications manager Mr Tonderai Mangombe outlined the organisation’s ambitious agenda for 2025, with a strong emphasis on Bulawayo’s Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport (JMNIA).
“Key projects for 2025 include the rehabilitation and expansion of Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport’s runway, the construction of a new air traffic control tower and the establishment of a modern fire station,” said Mr Mangombe.
He also highlighted ACZ’s commitment to sustainability, citing the planned installation of a five-megawatt solar plant at JMNIA.
Further, ACZ is also advancing strategic projects at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, passenger experience and overall airport capacity.
Diversifying revenue streams
ACZ is also reportedly pursuing new revenue-generation strategies to reduce reliance on traditional aviation income.
“We have embarked on a comprehensive revenue growth plan to improve profitability and position the company to declare dividends,” he said.
By fostering collaborations in air service development, ACZ aims to attract new airlines, expand Zimbabwe’s domestic air travel capacity and strengthen the country’s position as a regional aviation hub.
Key partnerships include engagements with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA), Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA), airlines and tourism industry players.
Optimism
Meanwhile, ACZ has expressed confidence in the business opportunities presented by the upcoming Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF).
As one of Africa’s premier trade showcases, the 65th edition of ZITF is scheduled to take place from April 21-26 at the Zimbabwe International Conference and Exhibition Smart City (ZICES) in Bulawayo.
Running under the theme “Industrialisation: Crafting an Integrated Economic Landscape”, this year’s trade fair is expected to generate significant economic activity, benefitting businesses across various sectors, including aviation.
“ZITF 2025 will bring a surge of economic activity to Bulawayo, making it one of the city’s most anticipated events.
The influx of visitors during the trade fair significantly boosts local businesses, with some operators depending on ZITF-generated revenue to sustain operations throughout the year,” said Mr Mangombe.
As a key stakeholder, ACZ recognises the substantial benefits the event brings to the aviation industry and remains optimistic about its impact.
Enhancing service delivery
With passenger volumes expected to rise during ZITF, ACZ has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing service delivery through continuous modernisation and infrastructure upgrades.
“Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport is well-equipped to handle the increased traffic associated with ZITF, ensuring a seamless travel experience for all attendees,” Mr Mangombe assured.
Beyond logistics, ACZ views the trade fair as a strategic platform for industry collaboration and innovation.
“As a premier trade showcase, ZITF provides a crucial opportunity for engagement, partnership building and the promotion of aviation sector advancements. ACZ looks forward to leveraging this event to highlight aviation’s critical role in economic growth, trade facilitation and connectivity enhancement,” he added.
With its ambitious 2025 agenda, ACZ is positioning itself as a driving force in Zimbabwe’s aviation industry, ensuring that airports across the country meet growing demand while contributing to national economic development.
