SECRETARIES should adapt to the changing world by being at the forefront of innovation, and embracing new technologies, Colonel Miniyothabo Baloyi- Chiwenga has said.

Col Baloyi-Chiwenga, who is the wife of Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga, said this yesterday at the National Secretaries’ Day celebrations hosted by the Nedle Training Services Board in the capital, where she was guest of honour.

“As we move forward in an ever-changing world, the role of secretarial professionals will continue to evolve.

“So, it is up to the secretaries to evolve in their roles. Change will always come, but if you don’t change with change, it will leave you behind.

“So, continue to improve yourself and making sure that you don’t become irrelevant in the organisations that you are changing day in and day out.

“You must believe in continuous learning, continuous self-development, continuous self-grooming and etiquette and all those things that make you a better secretary than you were yesterday,” she said.

By facilitating communication, managing schedules and handling tasks, the role of administrative assistants is crucial to the development process of attaining an upper middle-income economy, Col Baloyi-Chiwenga said.

For being representatives of their entities, she added, secretarial professionals ought to possess the right attitude as they serve both their principals and clients.

“But always bear in mind that after you have learnt whatever you learnt, after having had the experience that you have had over the years, there is one thing you cannot go to school to learn. That is attitude. Attitude will make you a better person.

“You may have all the papers, all the distinctions, all the qualifications, but if you don’t have the right attitude, no person would want to work with you. Attitude to the principals that you serve, attitude to the clients that come to your offices, they are important stakeholders,” she said.

Secretaries’ Day is held annually to honour the role played by secretarial professionals.

This year’s celebrations were held under the theme “Harnessing the power of exceptional support”.

At least 340 secretaries from various sectors attended the celebrations.
