Finally, the divisive and agent of regime change Brian Andre Nichols is leaving Zimbabwe after almost three years of service in the country. Nichols is leaving the country with his tail neatly tucked between his legs after failing to cause regime change in Zimbabwe as all his antics of causing uprisings in the were largely ignored by the conscientious Zimbabweans.
Nichols, the US ambassador to Zimbabwe is expected to leave the country anytime from now if recent media reports are true.
According to some official sources, American President Joe Biden is expected to nominate Nichols to be Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere. Some are saying the Biden administration is promoting Nichols, but to us, we just thank Biden for chucking this divisive element from our midst.
I don’t hate Nichols as a person, but I hate that he is a hypocrite. When he came to Zimbabwe to assume his duties in July 2018, he presented himself as a man who was ready to assist in mending decades of frosty relations between Zimbabwe and America, but it came out later that Nichols was in Zimbabwe as a political strategist for the opposition, particularly the MDC-Alliance.
In few days’ time after presenting his credentials to President Mnangagwa, Nichols had already forgotten what he said to the media personnel the day he presented his credentials to the President. Nichols, who had presented his credentials together with Mr Eric Saizonou, who was Benin’s first Ambassador to Zimbabwe, had said that the relations between Zimbabwe and the US were poised to grow stronger.
“I think the future of Zimbabwe is bright. The process of democratisation and reforms that are ongoing put Zimbabwe on the path to prosperity. The meeting we had (with President Mnangagwa) was positive and I believe if the reforms that have been announced and are ongoing continue, then our relationship will grow stronger by the day,” Mr Nichols said then. But soon after that, worrying reports began to filter that Nichols was nicodemously meeting with people like Nelson Chamisa, Job Sikhala and Hopewell Chin’ono to strategise on how they can dethrone the ZANU PF-led Government. Little birds began to whisper that the American Embassy in Westgate had become a hub of opposition politics with people like Chamisa and Biti becoming frequent visitors of the place.
Unconfirmed reports said that Nichols used the Embassy’s operational float to pay opposition activists like Chin’ono, Joanna Mamombe, Netsai Marova, Jacob Ngarivhume, Peter Magombeyi and Tawanda Muchehiwa to engage in silly acts that were meant to tarnish the image of the Government. Nichols’ funding for organisers of anti-Government protests are well documented.
Even, some wayward journalists were also recipients of Nichols’s dirty money as they were being paid to perpetuate a false assertion that there was a crisis in Zimbabwe.
I strongly believe that it’s not me alone who desperately want to see Nichols’ back. The usually tolerant ZANU PF party was also fed up with Nichols’ meddling in Zimbabwe’s internal political affairs.
Last year, it took the then acting secretary for Information and Publicity, Patrick Chinamasa to remind Nichols that he should behave in a manner worth of a diplomat and stop behaving like an opposition activist.
“Diplomats should not behave like thugs, and Brian Nichols is a thug,” Chinamasa said then.
To date, I still wonder why the Government chose to tolerate Nichols for such a long time, considering that he was one diplomat who was brazenly anti-Zimbabwe throughout his stay in this country. In some countries, Nichols could have been given his marching orders the very day he crossed the line between diplomacy and activism. In 2019, Zambia ordered pro-gay Ambassador to Zambia, Daniel Foote to leave the country. I had hoped that the pro-opposition and the pro-sanctions Nichols was also going to be given the boot. But still, the guy is going to leave soon and the whole country is waiting with bated breath to see the last of his toxic diplomacy.
As Nichols is leaving Zimbabwe, the new American administration should know that the Zimbabwean Government is most desirous of rebuilding relations with the United States, but some of Ambassador Nichols’ activities hindered all this. Besides being an opposition sympathiser and funder of anti-Government activities, Nichols was also a shameless liar.
Last year, Nichols told The Sunday Times that there was a political crisis in Zimbabwe characterised by gross human rights abuses, allegedly perpetrated by the Government. Such blatant violation of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations characterised Nichols’ stay in Zimbabwe.
Nichols was averse to the true Zimbabwean story, which is far from a country in crisis unlike in other countries where gunshots are the order of the day. Zimbabwe’s streets have always been peaceful and occupied by busy people, going about their business for the socio-economic-political development of their motherland.
But Nichols couldn’t say that because he is that breed of diplomats who use megaphone diplomacy of casting aspersions on the Zimbabwe Government and pushing opposition politics in the country to achieve regime change, which had always been his end game.
As an African-American, we had hoped that Nichols would be on the forefront of urging his government to unconditionally remove the illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe. But it seems, he was the one who advocated for the extension and more sanctions on Zimbabwe. It’s clear that Nichols is that black man who hates whatever is black and would want to please his white masters, even if it means stepping on the toes of his fellow black people.
In our Zimbabwean culture, we always say goodbye to someone who will be embarking on a journey and because of that l’m forced to say goodbye Ambassador Nichols. However, we will not miss him at all.
Maybe his friends in the opposition and those to whom he gave money to cause chaos in the country, will be at the airport to kiss their benefactor goodbye. As for us patriotic Zimbabweans, his departure was long overdue as his behaviour was akin to that of a devil, hence we can only say, good riddance.
