Adopt a street light

Municipal Reporter
A HARARE-based company, MarketLink Communications, is working on an initiative that will result in companies and individuals sponsoring the city’s public lighting under a project code-named “Adopt a Street Light”.
The idea is motivated by a realisation that public lighting is one of the major challenges facing Zimbabwe’s urban centres because of the high cost of installation and maintenance.

Muggings, robberies and in some instances cases of rape have been reported in poorly lit streets. This also contributes to a bad city image and reduces residents’ confidence in the city administration. Under the project, companies would be expected to adopt a street light or street lights. For adopting a street light or lights the company would be expected to pay a prescribed fee. The advantage to the company would be free advertising.
The fee is higher for a single street light and is reduced comparatively depending on the number of lights adopted.
