LIVESTOCK farmers in Buhera District have been urged to construct more than one kraal at their homesteads for rotation purposes as a way of preventing tick-borne diseases.
Buhera agronomist Mr Peter Mafukidze said since livestock production is an important source of livelihoods for rural households, small-holder farmers need to adopt effective ways of guarding against the outbreak of diseases and such preventive measures help in growing the herd.
“Livestock farmers have to take the necessary initiatives and measures to protect their herds. It is important for them to build several kraals at their homesteads for decongestion and rotation purposes so as to prevent disease outbreaks such as January disease and increase the herd,” said Mr Mafukidze.
Mr Mafukidze called on livestock farmers to frequently dip their cattle and fumigate the kraals regularly without solely relying on communal dip tanks.
He also urged them to buy chemicals from certified dealers to avoid being sold counterfeits.
Government last year launched the $500 million Presidential Livestock Blitz Tick Grease programme in efforts to fight livestock diseases and anchor growth of the national heard in line with the National Development Strategy 1 which prioritises animal health and production.
