A 38-year-old Mberengwa man dragged his bed-hopping wife to the civil courts, seeking maintenance for their two minor children.

Delisani Madukunye from Tsikisai Village in Mberengwa dragged his wife Faith Shoko to Mberengwa Civil Court accusing her of neglecting him with their two minor children.

Shoko appeared before Mberengwa magistrate Tavengwa Sangster.

a?This adulterous woman has abandoned me with the kids to pursue her own pleasures and is now living in Masvingo.

I cannot take care of the kids alone,a? said Madukunye.

Trouble started last year.

a?Your worship, we have been customarily married since 2001 but last year my wife decided to neglect the family as she hasnat been contributing anything towards the upkeep of the family, that is me and the two minor children,a? he said.

Madukunye asked the court to grant him 42 percent of his wifeas earnings.

a?She earns $500 at a local supermarket where she works. I need $208 for maintenance which will cover food, school fees, clothes and other expenses for our children,a? he continued.

However, Shoko dismissed that she was formally employed.

a?He is lying, I never worked at that supermarket. I am a vendor and now doing my vending activities in Masvingo and I cannot afford the kind of money he is asking for maintenance,a? she pleaded.

However, the court ruled in Madukunyeas favour and the magistrate ordered Shoko to pay $71 maintenance every month for the upkeep of her two children.

a?The courts are not there to encourage divorce and broken families but to encourage families to make peace, reconcile and raise their children together. It is not right for a woman to abandon her family for no reason. So you will have to pay $71 in maintenance to be deposited in your husbandas account every month,a? he said.
