Adventists defy odds on the road

BULAWAYO Adventists last week launched an athletics club, which they hope will promote fitness beyond the confines of the church.

The launch, which was on Saturday, was well-attended.

The formation of the Bulawayo club comes a decade after a similar club was established in Gauteng, South Africa in 2012. The vision of the founding members was to get Adventists to embrace healthier lifestyles by being physically active.

Dumolwenkosi Mpofu, the chairman of the club said at the launch that they run under the theme: “Fitness For Witnessing.”

Mpofu said in line with objectives of the organisation, they also share the word of God.
“The aim of the club is to promote members’ health and responsible living,” said Mpofu, who is also an active athlete.

He said they had realised that within Bulawayo’s road running community, there were some Adventists and they decided to harness the numbers and form a club, which, however, remains open to members of the Bulawayo community including those who are not Adventists.

“We want to harness and develop the marathon potential in Bulawayo,” said Mpofu.
The other Adventist athletes clubs are found in Harare and Victoria Falls .

Running for fitness and fun is a growing concept within communities who value health and camaraderie drawn from associating with different people.
