SPEAKER of Parliament Advocate Jacob Mudenda is in Baku, Azerbaijan, on a four-day working visit at the invitation of his counterpart, the Speaker of the Milli Majilis, Professor Sahiba Gafarova.

The Speaker is being accompanied by four legislators from the Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, chaired by Cde Webster Shamu.

The legislators are also members of the Zimbabwe- Azerbaijan Parliamentary Friendship Association.

The Speaker and his delegation arrived in Baku on Sunday and toured two historic sites in the city.

“On Monday, 6th July 2026, Speaker Mudenda and his delegation commenced the bilateral visit with a tour of two historic sites of the Azerbaijan Republic, namely, the Victory Park Monument and the tomb of the National leader, Heydar Aliyev at the Alley of Honour (Fakhri Khiyaban),” read a statement from Parliament.

“The Victory Park is one of Azerbaijan’s principal national memorials and a significant site of state commemoration honouring the victory achieved by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces during the 44-day conflict in 2020 over the Nagorno-Karabakh.

“The site also commemorates the military personnel who lost their lives during the fighting in the region, a battle rooted in a long-running territorial and ethnic dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan dating back to the final years of the collapse of the Soviet Union.”

The delegation also toured the Alley of Honour (Fakhri Khiyaban) that was established in 1948 during the Soviet period as a cemetery for distinguished Azerbaijani personalities.

“Speaker Mudenda laid wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldier at the Victory Park as well as the tomb of the late National leader, Heydar Aliyev, in meditative commemoration of those who shaped the history of the Azerbaijan nation,” read the statement.
