Harare magistrate Ethel Chichera has sentenced a 24-year-old University of Zimbabwe student to eight years imprisonment after finding him guilty of 14 counts of unlawful entry.
Tadiwa Delroy Chimutanda, who is studying Aeronautical Aviation, went on a spree stealing laptops at the students’ residence from last year to early this month.

Chimutanda was sentenced to eight years imprisonment and one year was suspended on condition he doesn’t commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Three years were suspended on condition that he restitutes the property that was not recovered by the police by July 31, and four years are effective.

The police managed to recover most of the property.

In one of the counts, Chimutanda broke into Elton Madison’s residence at Manfred Hostel at the campus on June 11 through the ceiling and stole his laptop that was on the charger.
Madison discovered the offence when he returned from the library and filed a police report.

Upon arrest on other offences, Chimutanda led the police to the recovery of that laptop which is valued at US$250.

Chimutanda used the same technique in all the counts.

Most of the stolen property was recovered at Ximex Mall.

Takudzwa Mutyavaviri was prosecuted.
