HARARE, Zimbabwe — In a compelling address at the High-Level Structured Dialogue on Zimbabwe’s national debt today, African Development Bank (AfDB) President Dr Akinwumi Adesina emphasised the need for unity and renewed vision to address the country’s financial challenges.
His remarks came as he welcomed new ambassadors from the UK, France, Canada, and the US, marking their commitment to engage in the debt resolution process.
Dr Adesina highlighted the importance of listening and collaboration, urging participants to “put the past behind us for a better future.”
He praised Zimbabwe as a beautiful nation with tremendous potential, saying: “It is time to make Zimbabwe beautiful again.”
The AfDB President stressed the need for a comprehensive plan to enhance infrastructure that would integrate the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
He underscored the AfDB’s commitment to supporting Zimbabwe, noting that the bank has already provided $55 million in credit to the private sector and is working on an additional $100 million facility for local financial institutions.
Dr Adesina announced that over 30 000 farmers have been supported through AfDB initiatives, with a target of reaching 200 000 hectares.
He called for a “time-bound plan” for debt clearance and resolution, urging development partners to provide clarity on reform incentives.
Dr Adesina thanked President Mnangagwa for his commitment to economic reforms, including a new land tenure policy, and requested an extension of the registration period for civil society organisations from three to six months.
As the dialogue progresses, Dr Adesina remains optimistic about Zimbabwe’s potential for economic recovery, saying: “The progress we have made and the commitment shown will bear fruit if we do not relent.” His remarks underscore the urgency of collective action in the quest for full arrears clearance and sustainable debt resolution for Zimbabwe
