HARARE, Zimbabwe — Former President of Mozambique, Mr Joaquim Chissano, addressed the High-Level Structured Dialogue on Zimbabwe’s national debt virtually today, citing political tensions in his home country as the reason for his absence.
In his speech, Mr Chissano highlighted significant progress in the dialogue process over the past three years, emphasising the importance of engagement and goodwill among stakeholders.
He praised the strides made in enhancing transparency and accountability, which he deemed essential for the success of the Staff Monitoring Programme (SMP). “The main thrust of dialogue, which is engagement, has been achieved,” he said, underlining the collaborative efforts that have characterised the discussions.
Despite acknowledging the remarkable progress in addressing Zimbabwe’s debt challenges, Mr Chissano warned that hurdles remain.
He identified the need for better coordination among the three pillars of the dialogue: the Zimbabwean Government, creditors, and other stakeholders. “The government is committed to implementing reforms; however, creditors must also support the process for it to be effective,” he said.
Mr Chissano’s insights reflect a broader recognition of the complexities involved in Zimbabwe’s economic recovery, as the country seeks to navigate its debt issues while fostering international cooperation and support.
His call for enhanced collaboration resonates as Zimbabwe continues its journey toward financial stability and growth.
