Afghanistan U19 sweep ODI series against Zim

ZIMBABWE Under-19 pace bowler Sydney Murombo took a six-wicket haul, but got no support from his batsmen to prevent a whitewash defeat by Afghanistan Under-19 in the fourth and final youth one-day international at the Greater Noida Sports Complex ground just outside the Indian capital of New Delhi.

The young Afghans went into the match having already wrapped up the series and were dismissed for 267 in 49.4 overs after being sent in to bat. Naveed Obaid top scored with 62 runs while Ihsanullah and Sayed Waheedullah each weighed in with 51 runs.

Murombo took six wickets for 48 runs while Blessing Mavuta was the only other bowler to come to the party with his 2-49. In reply, Zimbabwe were all out for 108 runs in 36.2 overs to lose by a convincing 159 runs.

Zimbabwe found the chase tough and clearly had no answer for the quick fire Afghanistan attack. Only three batsmen, opener Trevor Chibvongodze (12), number three Jeremy Ives (37) and number five Mashinge (24) scored double digits as the Afghans’ frontline put the Zimbabweans to the sword.

Left-arm spinner Zahir Khan retained figures of 4-13 in four overs, while pacemen Nijat Masood took 4- 24 in 8.2 overs and Mohammad Zahir 2- 19 of seven overs.

The four-match series were part of Zimbabwe’s preparations for the 2016 International Cricket Council Under-19 Cricket World Cup set for Bangladesh from January 27 to February 14.
