AS social soccer euphoria continues to grip Manicaland and beyond, six teams from across the province are on Africa Day (next Thursday), set to clash at St Dominic’s High School in a potentially-explosive soccer tournament.

Africa Day is celebrated every year on May 25, and it is an opportunity to celebrate African diversity and success, and to highlight the cultural and economic potential that exists on the African continent.

The six include the hosts, FC Chipolopolo, who will represent Mutare, Hauna Legends from Honde Valley, All Stars, Rusape Crackers and FC Muriwo from Rusape as well as Nyanga Legends.

The tourney kicks-off at 9am.

“We are looking forward to an exhilarating tournament on Africa Day. Preparations are at an advanced stage, and we are excited with the interests the tournament has generated on all participating teams. This is a special day as we commemorate African diversity and success.

“We urge people to come in their numbers and be part of the festivities. A lot of stakeholders have expressed interest to grace the tournament as well.

“A lot of prizes will be won, with the more lucrative ones to be handed over to the overall winner and runners-up.

“We encourage participating teams and their fans to observe time and other rules for us to have an exciting and peaceful event as people have fun as there is a thin dividing line between sport and entertainment,” said one of the organisers and former professional player, Goddy “Makepizha” Madziva.

Madziva, who is an exciting midfielder, is expected to lead favourites, FC Chipolopolo to their first trophy this year.

The team boasts of versatile players such as Khumbulani ‘KB’ Mfisha, Frank ‘KDB’ Bhunu, Kudzai ‘Sulu’ Bunya, Tatenda ‘Haaland’ Rukanda and Blessing ‘Bhule’ Matewerei among others.

Nyanga Legends is also one of the favourites as they boast of lethal strikers, Kenny ‘Mandebvu’ Mukonyora and Sponsor Mboneli.

This year’s Africa Day theme is: “Accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area to bring greater prosperity to the continent.”
