THE death of former Botswana President Festus Gontebanye Mogae at the age of 86 on May 8 opened a flood of tributes to a man widely credited for his leadership style and his unwavering commitment to the fight against the HIV/Aids pandemic.
Botswana declared three days of national mourning in his honour ahead of his burial at Phomolong Memorial Park in Gaborone, following a state funeral held on May 16.
Mogae, who served as Botswana’s third president from 1998 to 2008, was hailed by many leaders in Africa and across the SADC region for his steadfast resolve and courageous response to the devastating HIV/Aids pandemic, as well as for his sound economic stewardship.
He later handed over power to Ian Khama.
He was born in Serowe on August 21, 1939. Mogae studied in Britain before joining Botswana’s civil service shortly after independence in 1966. He held various positions and steadily rose through the ranks to become the country’s third president after Ketumile Masire stepped down.

Beyond his dedication to combating the HIV/Aids pandemic and his strong economic management, Mogae was widely admired for his values, integrity and discipline, as well as his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of his people. He remained a steadying presence and a source of comfort and pride for generations of Batswana.
In response to his death, the people of Botswana, alongside African and global leaders, offered heartfelt condolences while reflecting on his decades of service to Botswana, the SADC region, Africa and the wider world.
