AFRICAN diplomats accredited to Zimbabwe are leading coordinated resource mobilisation efforts for humanitarian relief towards Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa, following devastating floods resulting from torrential rains in the three countries.
Rwanda Ambassador to Zimbabwe James Musoni, who is also the Dean of the Africa Group of Ambassadors, said the initiative was a move “beyond words to action” underlined by Africa’s strength in unity.
In a statement, Ambassador Musoni expressed the group’s solidarity and condolences to the people and the governments of the three countries affected, indicating that Mozambique has been designated as the immediate priority beneficiary for relief support.
“On behalf of the Africa Group of Ambassadors accredited to Zimbabwe, I express our deepest solidarity and condolences to the peoples and governments of the countries affected by the devastating floods.
“Moved by the scale of this disaster, the African Group of Ambassadors convened an extraordinary meeting last week. We unanimously resolved to move beyond words to action by launching a coordinated resource mobilisation initiative.
“Efforts are ongoing to mobilise resources for humanitarian relief. Guided by needs assessments, the Republic of Mozambique has been designated as the immediate priority beneficiary for the first tranche of support,” Ambassador Musoni said.
He said there are encouraging initial commitments made by the group and they are now working to finalise the consignment of essential supplies.
“We are encouraged by initial commitments and are working to finalise the consignment of essential supplies. We are optimistic it will be ready for dispatch in due course. While our contribution is modest against the vast need, it underscores a vital principle: Africa’s strength lies in unity.”
Ambassador Musoni said Africa’s Group of Ambassadors stands in steadfast solidarity and will continue to engage different stakeholders and advocate for any support for the affected families.
