African Joy outfit, led by award-winning gospel singer Sabastian Magacha, is set to host a red carpet event for the première of the “Last Commando Battle Against Devil”, DVD at Ster Kinekor, Eastgate, tonight. The event is strictly by invitation with a themed black tie affair and scheduled to start at 7pm.
The DVD album, which was recorded live at 7 Arts Theatre in Harare, will be released tonight together with the compilation CD. The 35 song DVD features South African prolific musicians Joe Maphosa, Taurai Gordon Nzira, Pastor Zhakata, and Captain T. In an interview Magacha said he was happy with the progress so far.
“Now this is the time to give people what they have been waiting for. The DVD and CD album was inspired by how Christians should overcome the battle. The songs are more of inspirational with various artistes, composed by myself and some members,” he said.
His manager Benjamin Rupapa said this was a very big project and demanded a lot of financial backing.
“Writing a song is one thing and doing a video is another. If you follow Joyous Celebration, it takes them six months to produce a quality video, we don’t want to short-change people but to give them value for their money and quality viewing. We have invested a lot in this and hope it will serve a purpose to the community,” he said.
Rupapa said they shot the DVD in High Definition format. He said the event will see other friends in music, companies and stakeholders in attendance with a surprise guest of honour.
“Just like we did at the first episode of recording, we have engaged some stakeholders who have partnered with us and invited some top local gospel musicians. We have a surprise guest of honour who will deliver the key speech, but the purpose of the night is for fans to come and witness for the first time the DVD and have a feel of the project on big screen,” he said.
The formation of African Joy was inspired by other regional groups such as Joyous Celebration that comprise talented African musicians who include Jabu Hlongwane and Zimbabwean-born South Africa-based Mukhululi Bhebhe among others.
