THE Africa Infrastructure and Built Environment Confex (AfriConfex) has kicked off in Bulawayo bringing together experts and stakeholders in the construction and transport sector.

The three-day event which will end on Friday, started with a technical workshop, with Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga set to officially open Zimbabwe’s biggest gathering of buyers and sellers for the entire built environment value chain on Thursday.

With a focus on economic development through construction and infrastructure, AfriConfex 2024 is running under the “Resilient Cities, Thriving Africa: Building Sustainable Infrastructure for Economic Growth” at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre (ZIEC) in Bulawayo.

The event was organised by Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) Company in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development.

“The theme highlights the critical need for sustainable and resilient infrastructure in African cities to promote economic development. With the African population projected to double by 2050, there is an urgent need to invest in infrastructure projects that can support sustainable economic growth for African countries,” said the ZITF Company.

It said by bringing together key stakeholders to deliberate on key trends and critical insights into African construction and infrastructure value chains, along with key drivers, restraints, and growth opportunities, AfriConfex plays a pivotal indirect role in attaining these continental aspirations.

This year’s edition features an exciting exhibition and immersive conference programme.

The technical workshop held today (Wednesday) saw experts deliberating on issues that include the importance of industry and innovation, sustainable urban planning, climate action and partnerships in achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

Some of the key discussions focused on technological leapfrogging, human centred innovation in real estate development and financing infrastructure development.

In a previous interview, ZITF Company chief executive officer (CEO), Dr Nicholas Ndebele said AfriConfex 2024 offers a unique platform for indigenous contractors, equipment suppliers, and materials providers to showcase their expertise, explore regional and international opportunities, and stay abreast of the latest trends, technologies, and legal frameworks within the infrastructure and built environment sector.

“The event’s focus is on promoting collaboration and growth in the construction and infrastructure development sectors, facilitating networking among professionals, showcasing the latest technologies and solutions, and educating attendees on trends, best practices, and regulatory issues,” he said.
