A gold buying agent allegedly stole $38 500 he had been entrusted to buy the mineral on behalf of someone and filed a fake robbery case with the police. The State alleges that Matthew Mutanda (39) pocketed the $38 500 he had been given by the complainant (name not supplied) to buy gold on his behalf. He then misrepresented to the police that he had been attacked by armed robbers. Investigations proved he lied.

Mutanda appeared before magistrate Ms Barbara Chimboza facing theft of trust property charges. He was remanded to April 4 on $200 bail.

The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on February 25, the complainant wanted to buy gold and he engaged Mutanda, who is an agent, to buy on his behalf.
