volatile since the beginning of the year.
This was largely a reflection of the effect of currency movement and the rate of inflation on consumer goods prices.
Last month, the basket declined by 0,83 percent from the previous month’s figure.
The CCZ has, however, attributed the latest increase in the consumer basket to a “seasonal shift”.
“The cost of living as measured by the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe’s monthly basket for a family of six, has marginally increased to US$558,25 up from the July
figure of US$556,47, reflecting a 0,32 percent increase.
“The food basket rose by US$1,78 or 1,24 percent to US$145,72 from US$143,94 representing a 1,24 percent increase. The increases were due to agriculture produce as factored by the seasonal shift,” said CCZ in a statement.
An analysis of the latest consumer basket shows that increases in the price of agricultural produce drove up the cost of the basket.
Tomatoes, onions and cabbage all went up during the review period. Consumers also had to fork out more for margarine, rice and meat.
On the other hand, soaps and detergents, mealie-meal, sugar, milk, cooking oil, flour, bread and other commodities remained stable during the period under review.
