These structures are essential for efficient and productive agricultural practices. They are also vital for sustainable agricultural practices, food production and overall success of agricultural operations
Purposes of agricultural structures
Agricultural structures serve various purposes including:
a) Providing shelter and protection for crops and animals
b) Supporting crop production, processing and storage (eg planting, harvesting, storage)
c) Facilitating animal husbandry and management (eg breeding, raising, sheltering)
d) Enabling efficient water management and irrigation
e) Enhancing farm safety and security
f) Supporting research and development in agriculture
g) Equipment maintenance, and storage
h) Food processing and preparation
Key characteristics of agricultural structures
Agricultural structures have several key characteristics.
These characteristics are important considerations for designing and building effective agricultural structures that support efficient and productive agricultural operations.
In designing, Engineers consider these characteristics for particular operations. Some of the key characteristics include the following:
Durability: ability to withstand harsh weather conditions, heavy use and heavy loads. Therefore durable materials and construction methods are essential. As highlighted in previous editions, choice of material type should also be done using the intended application
Functionality: structures are designed to serve specific purposes , such as storage, shelter, or processing.
They must be functional and efficient
Accessibility: easy access is crucial for people, animals and equipment. This includes features like doors, ramps and wide entrances
Ventilation: proper airflow is vital for maintaining a healthy environment for animals and crops especially for animal shelters and greenhouses
Drainage: effective water management systems prevent water accumulation , which can lead to erosion, damage and safety hazards.
If there are problems with drainage, engineers design the proper and suitable drainage that ensures user friendliness of the facilities
Insulation: protection from extreme temperatures and weather conditions is essential for maintaining a stable environment
·Pest control: features like screens, seals and traps help prevent pest infestations and protect crops and animals
Easy maintenance: simple and cost effective maintenance and repair are crucial for minimizing downtime and reducing costs
Scalability/adaptability: agricultural operations, practices and technology can grow or change, so structures must be able to expand or adapt to suit the current trends and status and evolutions in technology and practices
Sustainability: the design should be environmentally friendly and energy efficient. This is important to reduce the environmental impact of agriculture such as the chopping of firewood for tobacco processing which leads to heavy deforestation
Safety: the designs should have safety features like ballustrading and handrails, non slip surfaces, and emergency exits to ensure the safety of people, animals and equipment. Heights accesses should have anti-falling features e.g. tank stand ladders to have cages
Cost effectiveness: there should be a balance between construction and maintenance costs with agricultural productivity for profitable operations. A cheaper design serving the same purpose can be prioritized
Aesthetics: they should be visually pleasing and blending with the surrounding environment. Visually pleasing structures can enhance the overall appearance of the agricultural operations
Compliance: meeting local building codes, regulations, and environmental standards is essential for avoiding legal issues and ensuring safety

These categories are not exhaustive, and many agricultural structures may overlap or serve multiple purposes. The following are some of the common types of agricultural structures:
1. Production structures: Barns, Silos, Greenhouses, Livestock shelters, Crop storage facilities
2. Storage structures: Granaries, Warehouses, Sheds, Implement sheds, Equipment storage buildings
3. Livestock structures: Animal shelters, Feedlots, Pens, Corrals, Dairy barns
4. Irrigation structures: Dams, Canals, Pipelines, Pumps, Water tanks
5. Fencing and enclosures: Fences, Gates, Corrals, Pens, Pasture enclosures
6. Processing and handling structures: Packing houses, Processing plants, Cleaning and sorting facilities, Weighing and grading facilities
