Zimpapers CEO Mr William Chikoto says the country’s largest integrated media organisation is transforming from a print-centric operation to a digital-first, AI-enabled news organisation.

Mr Chikoto told delegates at the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Journalism Education Summit in Harare that the shift is anchored on the adoption of new technologies to improve journalism efficiency.

He emphasised that AI tools are intended to enhance journalists’ capabilities rather than replace them.

“It was clear that our audiences were now digital first and we had to speed up our transformation to digital first and become AI-enabled. We are now digital first in our approach,” he said.

While progress is being made, Mr Chikoto noted the organisation has not yet reached its final destination.

“Our processes and workflows are now digital first and AI enabled. We have not yet arrived but we are in the process of ensuring that we get there because the process requires technology to drive this transformation,” he added.

The CEO’s remarks highlight Zimpapers’ commitment to embracing technological innovation as it navigates the opportunities and challenges of journalism in an AI-driven environment.
