Aids to become examinable subject

Danisa Masuku
HIV/AIDS could soon be taught as a stand alone subject at primary schools and be examinable at Grade 7.
This, according to the National Aids Council (NAC), would help everyone have a basic understanding of how the scourge affects society.

a?We have realised that there are new HIV infections found in adolescents, as such we have decided to engage the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to include HIV and Aids into the curriculum so that it becomes an examinable subject in primary schools than for it to be included in the General Paper as guidance and counselling,a? said the NAC operations director Ray Yekeye.

In their proposal, NAC said the subject would be called Life Skills Sexuality, HIV and Aids Education.

The subject could be taught from as early as Grade 1.

a?We are proposing that HIV and Aids be comprehensively taught in primary schools so that children become adequately informed on HIV and Aids. We believe that will help in behavioural change for teenagers and those who are HIV positive would benefit from such information andA be able to cope with the situation,a? said Yekeye.

He said as part of the proposal NAC officials would hold workshops with teachers to capacitate them with information.
