almost abandoned until the Manyame-based side “borrowed” players from Mbare Bulldogs who ply their trade in the second tier Metro League division.
Sports Club registered another huge score with an 83-0 victory over the combined Mbare/Air Force side that saw them move 11 points clear ahead of second placed O
ld Hararians who have 46 points.
But what surprises many is that the drama did not only take place on the field of play as the NRL, led by chairman and former Sables manager Noddy Kanyangarara, decided that the “social match” should count as a competitive league match.
Instead of abandoning the match, the national league administration allowed Air Force to use some Metro League-registered Mbare players who had earlier in the day
played a league game in their league.
The Metro League is one of the two second-tier rugby leagues and is based in Harare while the other league takes care of teams in Gweru and Matabebeland and is known as the Southern Region B-League.
Punching bags, Airforce, have all along been making a mockery of the NRL and are the laughing stock of the league.
In week six, the troubled side suffered the biggest loss in local rugby action in recent years with a 0-127 loss at the hands of Old Hararians.
First they suffered a 10-81 defeat at the hands of the Warriors before an 12-86 thumping at the hands of Harare Sports Club.
But the worst was yet to come as their losing streak continued in Bulawayo where they crashed 6-29 to Old Miltonians before defending champions Old Georgians thrashed the hapless Air Force side 94-3.
NRL Results
Harare Sports Club 83, Air Force 0; Old Hararians 47, Gweru Sports Club 19; Matland Warriors 3, Old Georgians 20; Old Miltonians 15, Panthers 9.
