Akbay signs 2yr deal… MUST WIN LEAGUE IN 2017

DUTCHMAN Erol Akbay has signed a two-year performance-based contract with Bulawayo giants Highlanders, his local manager Denford Mutashu, has revealed. The Dutchman, brought into the country and Africa for the first time by Bosso’s long time benefactor Tshinga Dube, is still in his native Holland awaiting the issuance of a work permit before he can take charge of the ailing Bulawayo giants.

“He has a two-year deal with Highlanders and it’s a performance-based contract that also includes certain conditions for each season, but I would not want to reveal the contents of that agreement. The club could be in a position to do that and maybe they will do so when they officially unveil him,” said Mutashu.

He said the work permit delay was due to some documents that had not been submitted, but that has since been addressed. “He has managed to send all the documents that the Immigration Department requested, so it’s now up to the system not him,” Mutashu said.

Chronicle Sport understands that Akbay’s contract stipulates that he must finish among the top four in the league in his first season. The league title is reportedly not a must, so as not to put him under unnecessary pressure. He is also required to win at least 20 points from the first 10 games. Akbay must, however, deliver the league title in 2017 without fail.

He is set to work with Amini Soma-Phiri as his assistant while veteran Cosmas Zulu will assume the role of goalkeepers’ coach.
