IT will be brother versus brother when Amakhosi Cricket Club 1 and 2 face off in the country’s premier club cricket competition, the National Premier League (NPL) Super 40 2026/27 season opener at Bulawayo Athletic Club (BAC) today.
The two Bulawayo based sister clubs will be eager to make an early impression in the tournament with what promises to be an enthralling encounter.
Amakhosi Cricket Club 2, go into the country’s premier club cricket competition at the back of an impressive run in the Bulawayo Metropolitan Cricket Association (BMCA) First League where they were crowned champions.
Their sister club, Amakhosi 1 will be hoping to continue where they left off in last season’s NPL where they enjoyed a brilliant run, finishing third.
Today’s encounter promises to be a top drawer affair between teams who enjoyed a decent run in the local league.
With the Amakhosi derby headlining today’s games, another potentially exciting match is on the cards as Bulawayo’s third representative in the competition and BMCA First League runners up, Queens Sports Club make the trip to
Kwekwe Sports Club to face last season’s runners up Takashinga Patriots 1.
The Queens, Takashinga 1 encounter promises to another mouthwatering match.
Completing today’s round of matches will be NPL debutants, Triangle who will be up against Rimuka at Masvingo Sports Club, marking a historic milestone for the Lowveld side following their promotion to Zimbabwe’s elite club competition.
NPL Manager Edward Rainsford said all preparations had been completed for another exciting season of top-flight club cricket. The NPL Super-40 got underway yesterday.
“We are delighted that everything is in place for the start of what promises to be another highly competitive NPL season.
“The standard of club cricket continues to improve each year and we are looking forward to seeing the country’s leading clubs and players showcase their talent over the coming months.
“The NPL remains a vital part of Zimbabwe Cricket’s player development pathway, providing a platform for emerging talent to challenge themselves against quality opposition while helping strengthen the game across the country. We wish all the teams the very best for the season ahead,” said Rainsford.
There will be little time to catch breath, with the second round scheduled for midweek.
Six matches are set for Wednesday before the opening week concludes with another fixture on Thursday, as the race for early-season momentum gathers pace.
