It is all systems go for the much-anticipated Queens Circle event, an initiative aimed at uniting and amplifying female voices in Bulawayo’s arts scene through an all-women showcase.
Hosted by musician Acquillah K in collaboration with Home of Arts Entertainment, the event will take place on Saturday at an auditorium in the city.
Yolly K, Lethu The Poet, Lee Mc’Honey, Bhekiwe, Mandie Mae, and Luchi Shiki promise to deliver an unforgettable night of poetry, music, and soul.
In an interview, one of the performers, Bhekiwe, known as the ‘pop princess’, said the energy they have shared during rehearsals has been great.
“I feel excited ahead of the event this weekend. We’ve had lots of rehearsals for the performance. Being around the other ladies has been very fun – they’re such a vibe,” she said.
One of the event organisers said they are expecting an attendance of 250 people.
“The Queens Circle event promises to be a memorable experience for all in attendance,” they said.
In a previous interview, event organiser Acquillah K said the platform was created to promote and empower women in the creative sector, while giving them visibility in an industry that often presents more hurdles for female artistes.
“Queen Circles is an initiative that aims to promote local talent, specifically women in the arts, from singers, rappers, dancers, and poets. I founded the movement, and my hope is for it to grow into an annual event,” she said.
The idea was inspired by her own experiences navigating the music industry.
“Ever since I ventured into music, it hasn’t been easy. As a woman, you have to push extra hard to be seen. So, I’m creating this space for us to be visible, hence the all-female line-up on stage,” she added.
From engagement on social media platforms, mainly X, the event is shaping up to be promising, as a growing number of fans have interacted with announcements of the various artists in the line-up as the highly anticipated day draws closer.
